Tanzania is currently undergoing a significant transformation in its education system, notably by shifting from a seven-year to a six-year primary school structure. Under the existing curriculum, Standard Seven is the highest class in primary education, marking the completion point before students transition to secondary school. This level culminates in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), which serves as a critical gateway to further education.
The reform aims to streamline the education system by reducing the duration of primary education from seven to six years. This shift aligns with global education standards and is expected to enhance efficiency and reduce the overall time learners spend in school before joining the workforce or higher learning institutions. It also reflects Tanzania's commitment to modernizing its curriculum and ensuring that students acquire relevant skills more quickly and effectively.
However, the transition brings with it several challenges and opportunities. Teachers will need retraining to adapt to the condensed curriculum, and learning materials must be revised accordingly. There is also a need for public awareness to ensure a smooth adaptation for students, parents, and educators alike. If implemented successfully, the new six-year primary school system could improve learning outcomes and better prepare Tanzanian children for the demands of secondary education and beyond.
The old and new system was under duo languages, Kiswahili and English. Most of public schools uses Kiswahili Language as a medium of teaching and learning, while the almost all private owned schools uses English Language as teaching and learning medium.
